Mandela Day 2017
Reading is the key to learning. Unlock the door this Mandela Day.
Nelson Mandela said that, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” These words resonate strongly with the Learning in Reach team. We are on a mission to build an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre of Excellence in Lavender Hill. We see this as a means to driving change and providing hope to the children of Lavender Hill.
This Mandela Day, Learning in Reach is preparing to deliver 6700 books to the children of Lavender Hill, while simultaneously raising R1 million to support our parent empowerment programs and the establishment of a new ECD centre, Rock of the Hills.
International studies have revealed that regardless of nationality, level of education, or their parents’ economic status, children who grow up with books in their homes reach a higher level of education than those who do not.*
In honour of Mandela and his vision, we will be putting a book into the hands of every child attending each of the four primary schools and every child at an ECD centre in Lavender Hill, bringing reading into the home. Some of these children have never owned a book before. Let’s unlock the child’s true potential and give each individual a chance to shine.
We invite you to take part in our Mandela Day Challenge. Please share the love with 6-7 friends or family to keep the momentum going. Together we can drive change for our children.
There are two ways you can get involved in 2017:
1. Power of Literacy event:
Arrange a book wrapping event at your office, school or with your family to get involved for #67minutes. 6700 books will be distributed to Lavender Hill 0-13 year olds. Many of these children do not have books at home and this will be the first book they own.
- Learning in Reach will either deliver pledged books to you (Cape Town only) ahead of time (<100 participants) or set up a pop up shop in your boardroom/foyer (>100 participants) on Mandela Day.
- Spend 67 minutes: select on of our age-appropriate books for a child, write a letter of motivation/kindness to the child and place it inside the book. Wrap the book to gift to a child in Lavender Hill.
- Donate R67: Learning In Reach request that you donate a minimum of R67 per book to take part in this event
- Invest R67: Should your company host an event, we ask that the company consider matching the employee’s R67 donation.
Your #67 minutes and R67 will make a significant and lasting impact in this community through literacy, early childhood development and parent and teacher training.
2. Power of 67 pledge:
Should you not wish to take part in our #PowerOfLiteracy event, you can still share the #PowerOf67 by pledging R67 towards Learning In Reach projects and inviting 6 of your friends/colleagues/suppliers or competitors to do the same.
